Where are we now?

The Violet Mbiti Foundation (VMF) is a non-profit organization committed to advancing social justice, gender equality, public finance accountability, climate action, and inclusive economic development. We work with communities, governments, civil society organizations, and development partners to strengthen citizen participation in governance, improve transparency and accountability in public resource management, promote clean energy solutions, and empower women, youth, and marginalized groups.

To deepen youth engagement and community-led development, the Foundation operates Youth County Projects Kenya (YCPK)—its youth leadership and implementation platform. Through YCPK, we equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to lead climate action, environmental conservation, green entrepreneurship, civic engagement, innovation, and social accountability initiatives that contribute to sustainable county development.

Together, VMF and YCPK have contributed to improved public participation in county planning and budgeting, strengthened budget transparency and accountability, supported policy advocacy, advanced locally led climate action and clean cooking initiatives, promoted youth leadership and green livelihoods, and enhanced collaboration between citizens, government institutions, and development partners.

Where do we want to be?

We aspire to be a leading African organization advancing socially just, climate-resilient, and environmentally sustainable development. We envision empowered communities where women, youth, and marginalized groups have equal access to opportunities, quality public services, sustainable livelihoods, and meaningful participation in decision-making processes.

Through the Violet Mbiti Foundation and Youth County Projects Kenya, we aim to become a recognized center of excellence in public finance management, governance and accountability, gender equality, climate resilience, renewable energy, youth leadership, social entrepreneurship, and policy advocacy—driving innovative, community-led solutions that influence policies and systems across Kenya and beyond.

How will we get there?

We will achieve this by:

  • Strengthening evidence-based research to inform policy dialogue, advocacy, and decision-making.

  • Expanding civic education and citizen engagement on governance, public finance, climate governance, and social accountability.

  • Empowering young people through Youth County Projects Kenya to become leaders in climate action, innovation, entrepreneurship, community development, and civic participation.

  • Building strategic partnerships with governments, development partners, civil society organizations, academia, youth networks, and the private sector.

  • Scaling locally led climate action, renewable energy, clean cooking, environmental conservation, and green enterprise initiatives that improve livelihoods while protecting the environment.

  • Promoting women's and youth economic empowerment through entrepreneurship, technical skills development, mentorship, and leadership programmes.

  • Advocating for gender-responsive, youth-inclusive, and climate-responsive public policies that ensure equitable access to public resources and quality services.

  • Strengthening institutional capacity, governance systems, digital innovation, and resource mobilization to enhance organizational effectiveness and long-term sustainability.

  • Monitoring, evaluating, documenting, and sharing evidence of impact to promote learning, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

By integrating policy advocacy through the Violet Mbiti Foundation with youth-led implementation through Youth County Projects Kenya, we are building a movement that strengthens accountable governance, advances climate resilience, promotes inclusive economic opportunities, and empowers communities to lead sustainable development from the grassroots to the national level.
