About Violet Mbiti Foundation

Violet Mbiti Foundation  is a  non-political civil society organization working at the grassroots to strengthen citizens voice in budget advocacy for equitable and better-quality services. Our work is centered around the thematic area of Governance and Devolution that employs an advocacy strategy that ensures policies, laws and priority development initiatives are in favour of  vulnerable and marginalized people.

 

We currently have 85 budget champions trained on the budget making process as Trainers of Trainers to enable them cascade the knowledge to the village level.This has been made possible courtesy of our partnership in Machakos County with Uraia Trust and International Budget Partnership Kenya.In Nairobi County this has been made possible by being members of MNH Association and receiving support from Options Consultancy Ltd based in UK.

 

We are the convenor of Machakos and Nairobi County Budget Champions who are a collective of public finance management, transparency and accountability advocates working across various wards.They comprise religious institutions (Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims, National Council of Churches of Kenya, Evangelical Alliance of Kenya and Seventh Day Adventist), Civil Society Organizations and Media.The collective focuses on advocacy efforts in various sectors, aiming to promote inclusivity and equity in the distribution of public resources.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We are also the brain-child behind  digital innovations namely "Adolescent  and Youth SRHR Digital Platform" , "Budget Café Discussions" and "Real Talk Show Hosted by Violet Mbiti" and "Youth County Projects Kenya" with one of them being featured in the African Innovation Week 2020.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Since inception in 2017,our focus has been on improving maternal and neonatal health and later on we diversified to other sectors.Our advocacy entailed utilizing different approaches.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Using E4A Mama Ye Political Economy Analysis tool, we have been able to identify, and later reassess, advocacy targets and pathways to achieving our goals by understanding underlying interests, incentives, and institutions that affect change. As a result, we managed to map decision makers and target them to respond to the priority issues.

We have been able to hold round-table discussions with County Assembly of Machakos which resulted in passing of the Youth Policy and have also held round-table discussions with County Executive Director of Budget and Chief Officer ICT which resulted in key budget documents being uploaded on Government website to enable citizens scrutinize how public resources are utilised.

 

We have also supported the County Government of Machakos in making an application to join the Open Government Partnership and the application was a success where Machakos County is among 55 local jurisdictions  selected globally to join 2024 cohort.By being part of the Open Government Partnership,Machakos County will be able to foster transparency, citizen participation, and accountability at the local level.
